Fifth Street Saints Photo Shoot : Knoxville Band Photography

We just put the finishing touches on our shoot with a really great new band, Fifth Street Saints! We have been lucky enough to get a early copy of their new EP "Reasons To Run" that comes out next month, we can tell you everyone is going to be hearing a lot more of this band very soon!

The shoot was a lot of fun, we mostly shot around locations in the downtown Knoxville area. This panoramic image was in a alley we found and set some lights up in. We shot using a focus-stacking technique while moving the lights around to give the appearance that everyone is on the same focal plane.

One of the things both we and the band were interested in was creating a sense of motion in the photos. Another theme we agreed on was that there needed to be ghosts! We shot this one on the stairs at the Bijou Theatre. It is blended from about 8 separate exposures made without moving the camera.

This was another "dusk" shot outside near downtown, we got some pretty entertaining looks while we were setting off smoke-bombs and studio strobes. It might have looked crazy to everyone passing by but sometimes that's what you have to do to get interesting shots.

This was a really fun shot we did inside the Bijou. We put the guys to work making them run all over the theatre while we snapped away. This final image is made up of over 60 different exposures that we blended together in post by hand.

This is a fun composite that we shot in different locations. I wish everyone could see the 600MB+ full size tiff file, it has a ton of detail we worked into it. Some of it was captured at the Bijou Theatre and some of it was done in studio. We took a lot of images of the Bijou and cut them up in order to build a stage that was the right size to put the band on. The idea was from the title of the new band's new EP, it's about leaving the past behind while being caught between the life you knew and the life you want. Our model Tessa did a great job as a ghost metaphorically interpreting different stages of acceptance and denial.

Jacob has a selection of 6 prints from the "Little Grand Canyon" available in the longwerks ETSY store. Prints are available as a 10x15" or 20x30" either framed or matted. Photos were captured on medium format film and then scanned with a drum scanner and printed on real Ilford B&W photo paper so the quality is excellent. Be sure to check them out!

Jack LaLanne 1914-2011

Back in 2005 I got an assignment to shoot a Jack LaLanne fitness presentation for the city of Chattanooga, TN. I found out on arriving at the event that Jack had just celebrated his 91st birthday. I knew that Jack was a fitness celebrity from a time long before I was born, so while I was intrigued I didn't expect that I would have any trouble covering the event. I was wrong. From the moment Jack's wife Elaine announced him on stage he had the audience eating out of the palm of his hand. He walked onto the stage in a one-piece black power-suit with one hand on his hip, hunched over & hobbling, dragging one foot behind him. The audience began to whisper, I looked around trying to figure out what the big deal was with this elderly guy, I couldn't see him having any useful fitness information to pass along if he could barely walk.

Suddenly Jack dropped face first, the audience gasped and I raised my camera anticipating the worst. What I saw in my viewfinder completely dumbfounded me. Jack caught himself, arms-locked, inches from he floor and began pounding out push-ups with ease while grinning at the audience with a smile that would put Jack Nicholson to shame. For the next half-hour Jack never stopped moving, he had everyone in attendance out of breath trying to keep up with him - myself included. I didn't know how much more this guy could have left, he went through his entire daily routine plus he had already given out additional fitness routines to a group of pregnant ladies, an office party, a high-school football team and a hoard of other elderly attendees.

As the program winded down Jack was enthusiastically taking questions from the audience in-between doing jumping-jacks and squat thrusts. I moved to the back of the crowd to try to get some wide-angle shots and noticed an elderly lady in a wheel chair on the back row trying to raise her arm above her head to ask a question. I knew no one could see her so I stood behind her and waved at the stage hoping they could see me. Jack squinted in my direction and waved back, I pointed down and the crowd turned and parted to see who I was pointing at. Jack's wife Elaine bolted from the stage and brought a microphone to the woman so she could ask a question. A hush fell over the audience as the woman's frail voice asked if it was too late for her and if there was anything she could do to exercise. Jack stopped his entire presentation, walked out to the woman and delivered his trade-mark line of "It's never too late to start exercising" with the sincerity of a true believer. He then returned to the stage and on-the-spot created a workout routine for the woman as if she were the only person in attendance.

Jack passed away today at the age of 96 at his home in Morro Bay, California. Jack came from a period in America when the actions and accomplishments of a person spoke much louder than the empty words that fill up newspaper articles and page-six tabloids. If there was ever an example of someone who truly talked the talk and walked the walk it was Jack. How many other people do you know who celebrated their 70th birthday by swimming 1.5 miles in hand-cuffs while towing 70 boats with 70 people in them? Whenever I feel a lack of motivation to exercise and take care of myself all I have to do is think about Jack, I know he would kick my ass if I even thought about giving up. Today we didn't lose some mindless over-hyped media-created celebrity. We lost a true American icon.

The US Government and BP are trying to keep photos of the spill off of the news by blocking journalists access to the spill for only 20 minutes in the morning and 20 minutes at sun set (after the have already cleaned the areas so there is nothing to left to see!)

We have opened a shop on Etsy! We've been looking for an outlet for our art (we only have so many walls!) and we would love to make our creations more accessible to all the art lovers out there. I already have an online craft store (TheCreativeGene.etsy.com) that I share with my Mom so why not a Longwerks Fine Art store?

I've started off filling the store with my newest series "TTV" which means Through The Viewfinder. I'm really enjoying the process and can't wait for good weather.

Some works from our website will be available for purchase and some will be brand new. Look for photography, painting, block printing and anything else we can get our hands into.

Jacob has also started a somewhat daily photo blog 365 Lumens.

I only recently found this website - Once Wed - and I love it! Their whole concept is Designer Weddings For Less. Once Wed features wedding ideas, real weddings, diy ideas, and even has used wedding dresses listed for sale! Everything is super cute. I especially love all the DIY projects. (with my etsy website & our home renovation project - we're into DIY)

Most of this is posted on our WeddingWire Storefront, but I thought I'd share it with our blog readers as well and maybe add a few more.
These are generalized questions and we can change things to accommodate special situations. Please ask if you have any questions.

Frequently Asked Questions for Photography

What primary photographic style do you identify with?

Contemporary, Photojournalism

What do your packages include?

Albums, Custom Graphic Design, Digital Files, High Resolution Images, Prints

Do you offer special techniques such as hand-coloring or toning?

We can do any special technique that is requested.

How many color vs. black & white images?

We generally let the image inspire our color choice as black & white can give a different feeling to an image than color would. The majority of the event will be in color and we don't have a set number of black & white vs. color images. If there is a color image you would like in b&w it is no problem to provide that, or vise-versa.

Do you have experience shooting in various lighting situations?

We have experience in all lighting situations.

Do you visit ceremony and/or reception sites before?

We usually do like to visit the sites beforehand if possible.

Who is responsible for obtaining the photographer guidelines from the church or receptions site?

The couple is responsible for letting us know the guidelines or rules for their church or event facility.

Is your media preference film or digital?

We use digital for all weddings.

How many photographers do you work with?

Longwerks is Jacob & Rachel Long. Both photographers go to each wedding and they are the only photographers in the company.

Do you guarantee your presence at the actual event?

Yes, we will be at your event. No substitutes.

Do you sometimes book yourself for more than one event in a day? Weekend?

We never book more than one a day and we will only do more than one a weekend in an extreme case. We want to be refreshed and energized for each event.

Do you have a replacement photographer in case you become unavailable on the day of the event?

Only in an extreme case would we not be available. The client will be notified as soon as possible and a replacement may be suggested, but client is responsible for replacement.

What kind of equipment do you typically bring with you on the day-of?

A number of cameras, lenses, flashes & other light manipulators, plus a set of studio lights.

Do you bring back-up equipment to the event in case of malfunction?

Yes.

Do you charge hourly or full day?

We charge for the full day. Most of our collections include 8 full hours and additional hours are always available.

Are you available to shoot extra hours? If yes, how much do you charge for extra hours?

Yes additional hours are available. $200 per hour and that includes both photographers remaining at your event.

What is your policy on taking breaks? If you require a meal break, do you require that the client provide your meal?

We usually get so into it we don't stop much. We do appreciate a meal being provided for us and we will usually take some kind of break at the reception.

Do you take table shots? (photos of the guests at their tables, generally asking half the table to get up and stand behind the other half of the table)

We do not take table shots. They must be special requested. We opt to get a more natural photos of guests dancing, talking or laughing with each other candidly rather than an awkward, posed table shot. [related article.]

Are you willing to follow a shot list?

Since we shoot in a photojournalistic style, generally we do not need a shot list unless something special is requested. We do suggest our brides make a list of who they want in the group photos just to make it go a little faster. We are also open to suggestions of any photo couples have seen and would like to recreate.

Do you charge for travel?

We do have a small travel fee for over 100 miles roundtrip.

How soon after the event are the proofs ready for viewing?

4-8 weeks depending on the season. We do post processing and retouching by hand with every image that is presented to the couple.

In what format are the initial proofs offered?

We offer an online gallery for our couples and their families to view. 4x6 print proof sets are available as an addition to any package.

How long can the client keep the proofs?

The online gallery is up for 270 days and can always be posted again if necessary. The couple also has the option to buy the html gallery (or a flash gallery) to host on their own website. Proof print sets are property of the couple after purchase.

How many images will the couple receive?

We usually shoot between 1000-2000 images per wedding. We then edit that down to the very best 500 or so photos and post-process/retouch that selection for the couple's online gallery. We've learned that with any more than that the couple is overwhelmed and the selection process becomes very difficult when it comes time to choose prints and album photos. Print sets and digital files of all 500 photos may also be purchased.

Do you retain the copyright for the photos?

Longwerks retains copyrights to all imagery, but the couple will receive a print release to be able to print the images on their own if they opt to purchase the digital files.

Do you reserve the right to publish the photos?

Longwerks retains the right to publish any imagery.

Do you provide the digital files and/or negatives (or copies of the negatives) to the client?

Digital files are available as an addition to any package.

Will images be available for viewing online?

Yes. On our website under Weddings - Client Images/Purchase Prints

Can guests/family order prints directly from the photographer?

Yes. Anyone can order photos on our website under Weddings - Client Images/Purchase Prints

Are prints on archival paper?

When you order a print from us (excluding 4x6 size and canvas prints) it will be printed using the LightJet process onto Fujicolor Crystal Archive paper that has an outstanding lifespan of 60+ years before fading.

What kind of albums do you offer?

All albums are custom designed in-house. We offer Asukabook albums for engagement sessions and beautiful Graphistudio albums for weddings. Plenty of cover, size, and page options available.

When will the client get the final album?

After the couple chooses the photos for their album, we hand-design the layout (no templates) which takes 1-3 weeks, then and after the couple's approval, it is sent to be printed. Printing takes 4-8 weeks and the couple will receive their album after it is delivered to our office.

What is the deposit amount?

50% deposit with the contract is due at the time of booking. We accept cash, check, and PayPal (credit card available through PayPal). We also have payment plans and options available.

When is the balance due?

The remaining balance is due on the day of the wedding. Some couples like to send it a week or 2 before just to make sure and have one less thing to worry about.

For 2010 we've updated our packages and services a bit. At the end of the year we like to go over our services and try to make things bigger and better for everyone in the year to come. Since we want to give our couples the best package value they can get, we've redesigned a few things.

Our system is more streamlined and every package comes with an album. All of our couples deserve a beautiful album to share their memories with each other, friends and family in the years to come. Plus each album is custom designed in-house by Jacob specifically for the couple. (His amazing designs blow me away every day.)

Also new this year are our printing options. We have a huge list of print sizes from 4x6 to 24x36, not to mention canvas prints and everything in between. Most photos are printed with the light-jet process and all are gallery quality prints that will last a lifetime.

And as always, we work as a team and photograph every wedding together.
